One Company, Two Philosophies

Space Goes Forward With Lay Off
On March 4 fourteen hourly employees were notified that there positions were downsized due to the down turn in the Rl-10 Business Unit.

Earlier union officials meet with Space Management asking them to look at alternatives to laying off skilled labor. Leave of absences, returning work to the shop from outside vendors, temporary assignments to assists in the growing work in Calfornia were suggested.

The company continues the statement that they are committed in growing the Space Business in Florida yet no attempts of retaining the skilled labor were exercised. With the decision to layoff during this down turn in RL-10 orders, Where will the skilled labor come from when business picks up?

The only part of the statement of being "committed in growing the business" that seems true is that the company is "committed".

Jet Test Avoid Hourly Layoff
The management in Florida's Jet Propulsion Test area avoid a lay off during a slow down in work. Management announced earlier this month that a layoff would possibly by required due to the lack of jet engines sent here for the test stands.

Jim Dwyer spoke with union officials last week to announce that the layoff would be avoided. Alternatives were worked out to retain the skilled labor that would be needed for the future when work would pick up.

Mr. Dwyer worked hard in setting up road trips for the mechanics to keep them working. Leaving of absences would also be look into.

Our hats off to Mr. Dwyer and his management for recognizing that skilled labor plays an important part in the success of jet Engine Test Facilities here in Florida. Hopefully this type of business decision will wear off on our other resident on our Florida campus.
